No Summer holidays this year, but luckily we’re still allowed to enjoy the sun! And what’s a better way to do so wearing a kick ass bikini that makes both you and the environment happy?
I gathered 6 very different swimwear labels that all have a very different style but serve the same goal: making you feel great in the sun, and not harming the planet while doing so. How so, you ask? This can range from using recycled fabrics, to creating high-quality pieces that you’ll wear for years to come (instead of buying new swimwear every season), to designing and producing everything locally. Small steps, or big!
So, if you haven’t found your dream swim piece and looking to invest in one, you might want to check out these fun labels below!
FISCH swim
This eco-innovative label is designed St. Barths and inspired by the Creative Director’s childhood spent on the island. Launched in 2017, the brand was born from the desire to create statement swimwear with a superior fit and timeless design that helped to keep waste out of the ocean by up-cycling.
FISCH’s entire collection is made from ECONYL ® – a 100% regenerated nylon fiber crafted from abandoned fishing nets and other types of nylon waste. Each piece from every collection is handmade in Italy from fabric woven in Lombardy, to ensure the highest quality possible while helping to minimize our carbon footprint.
youswim
This England-based label designs swimsuits that adapt to fit you and your body’s natural state of flux. Their mission is to create swimwear that represents women realistically, accepting our bodies as they are — unique, ever-changing, and unedited. One youswim piece fits no less than seven sizes! This means that all different types of bodies and sizes can fit their swimwear, plus it celebrates and accepts your personal, evolving shape: your piece will fit Summer after Summer.
All pieces are ethically woven, dyed, cut and sewn in England using European-sourced nylon and elastane and packed by their team in London.
I personally purchased the Poise one-piece in black as the ultimate essential item that I’ll be wearing for years and years hopefully. Love the fit and super comfortable, thick stretch material!
OceanZen
OceanZen‘s founder, ocean conservationist Steph Gabriel, launched her debut swim collection in 2014 made from a revolutionary and sustainable fabric that regenerates abandoned fishing nets and plastic bottles from the ocean. Her calling, saving the ocean, one bikini at a time.
The label’s mission is to inspire, influence and empower their community of women to become conscious consumers and passionate about our ocean life. Their products are created by a small family run manufacturing studio in Bali, following strict ethical business practices and fair trade wages.
Marie Jo
A great way to start shopping more sustainable, is to take a look at local labels first before ordering from international brands. You know, #ikkoopbelgisch! Marie Jo is one of my favourite Belgian lingerie labels and launched a classic, high-quality swimwear collection in 2018. In their Belgian ateliers (that I already visited) all the pieces are hand-designed by and for women.
And speaking of design; craftmanship is the most important thing for Marie Jo. The brand aimes at nothing less than the ultimate fit and comfort, meaning that all of the swimwear is extremely comfortable, supportive and long-lasting — as you won’t want to be wearing anything else anymore.
As a brand ambassador, I got to pick out my fave style too! That stunning white retro ruched bikini is currently on its way to me, so I can’t wait to share my experiences with you.
TET Swimwear
Only just launched in 2018, TET Swimwear aims to create fashion-forward swimwear with a conscience. The label’s primary focus is to build a brand that effectively tackles debris reduction, particularly the plastic that litters the sea. All of the swimwear is crafted from Repreve – an innovative, high-quality performance fabric that’s made from plastic waste and industrial nylon waste.
The swimwear is either reversible or interchangeable; so once you purchase an item from our collection you can wear it again next season.
We Are We Wear
This UK-based brand believes EVERY woman should feel confident in swimwear. The founders are advocates for body positivity and want to encourage women to be themselves. Embracing the rise in women buying swimwear for nights out, festivals, layering pieces and even to work out in, the We Are We Wear collection includes classic, simple shapes that can be worn in multiple, versatile ways — allowing customers to create their own style, their own way.
They carry an Eco edit that’s made in Italy from unwanted waste materials such as fishing nets, industrial plastics and fabric scraps and is available across all sizes with flattering styles to compliment all body shapes.
